Motorcycle Riding: Second Chances

Yesterday I conquered so many new things on my first big, 30-mile ride out towards Lookout Mountain.  I couldn’t have been more pleased.  Success often begets more success.  Smaller triumphs give us the confidence to stretch a little bit more, towards even greater successes.

So, today, I went for my own second chance at reaching my previous goal.  I crawled out early this morning, knocked through some work for our business that needed done, then…. rode 50 miles on the bike…  alllll the way out to the hang gliding jump, up on Lookout Mountain, on a gorgeous 80 degree kinda day.

It’s a sweeping view out over the variegated blues of the Cumberland Plateau, sun spilling through the clouds. It changes its mood with every visit!

I stretched myself in all new ways.  Not only 20 extra miles in the saddle, but, I also navigated the same small town, with it’s multiple lanes, winding roads, traffic lights, this time, not on the weekend, but on a weekday, with its heavier traffic.  I navigated road resurfacing work that caused traffic to go down into one lane.  I worked out starting out on a steep, steep slope on the road going up onto the ridge road.  And, I dealt with a whole lot more traffic today.

The thing that tickled me the most happened when I stopped, taking a break at a military park, on the way home, to chat with my motorcycling riding guru, Adam.  As we were talking about my riding experiences and progression, he said to me, “Renee, I’m amazed!  You learn new things almost like a child, so easily and quickly!!”  WOW!!  That says a LOT coming from a guy who has been riding both on- and off-road for over 30 years!!  And, it says a WHOLE LOT about the Competence-to-Confidence approach to learning new skills.
