Motorcycle Riding: Doin’ Time

Some things are simple, you’ve just gotta’ do what you’ve gotta’ do.  And in this case, that’s doin’ time, planting you backside on your bike and riding.

Today, I rode up and down, back and forth along the Ridge Road, taking the same curves, leaning into them a little more with each pass, upshifting and downshifting frequently, ducking the same potholes, having a scary slippy-sliddy moment over a wet leaf covered manhole cover – the voice of my riding friend passing through my terrified mind… “By the time you’ve felt it, it’s already all over with!  Just keep going.”

Lessons:  That just putting in time alone, especially at the beginning really reaps rewards in terms of gaining the confidence that allows you to take further steps in cultivating furthered competence.  Later in the process, it’s important that the practice be very intentional, deliberate – you can remain stuck at a given level of skill if you don’t then bring the intentionality of deliberate practice to bear on your practice.  But, at the beginning of the learning curve, you already have to attend to more than your mind can possibly manage, and you’re making distinctions without having to push yourself to make them.
