I do this little exercise for myself, when I’m stretching my concept of what is possible for me. I call it my Fake-Myself-Out-On-It-Math. It’s kind of my own little sanity check. I think about something I’ve already accomplished in relationship to my BHAG, and then extrapolate out to my BHAG from it. In my case, I’ve ridden my little 250 Virago for 120 miles in one day. I’ve also ridden the Triumph 800 for hours and hours.
Based on that, I think to myself, hmmm, I only have to ride 200 miles/day for 10 days to make the trek from ArizonA to OhiO – easy peasy!! I only have to ride for 100 miles, which is only 2 hours worth of riding at 50 mph, stop and find a lovely spot for lunch, ride another 100 miles, tuck myself in somewhere for the night, rinse and repeat 10 times.
Then, If I just leave a couple of days on the end to not press myself up against any kind of deadline, it feels really comfortable to me to accomplish this trip. And, if I need to, I can always pass out in some seedy motel or AirBnB bed and scroll through Facebook all day if I just can’t bear to put my backside back on that bike for another minute at any point, or if I run into any kind of mechanical or weather issues.
Cuz, sometimes, you just have to Fake It Til Ya’ Make It!
