Step 8: Now that I have a prioritized to-do list of items to work on, I push myself to make a list of hard ‘n fast rules for myself that I never allow myself violate, that require me to automatically abandon my pursuit, so as to preserve my well-being. I call them my live-to-play-another-day rules.
I never want to do something that causes me to risk not being able to play on subsequent days. Getting myself killed, generally speaking, ends the merry-go-round ride. As does getting myself seriously to mildly hurt. I’m always looking for ways to put a safety net under myself so that I can go and do what I want to do, while keeping me safe.
This is the list of “always” and “nevers.”
What are your hard and fast rules you never violate?
- If I don’t have the whole month of April free to go, you don’t go!! (I just blocked the whole month out on my calendar for this!!)
- If the bike seat isn’t at a safe height for me to ride, the trip gets scrapped and I find a different way to bring the bike back to Ohio
- If I can’t get the bike reliably up off the ground, by myself, I must forgo the trip
- I never ride in freezing temperatures
- Any hint of snow, high winds, etc I plan my route to head south or I must stay put, and discontinue riding until it passes
I add to this list of rules as I continue forward with my trip planning. These rules are firmly planted in my mind, and, also, that of the Hottie Hubby, so he checks me if necessary as well.
