Motorcycle Riding, Riding on Borrowed Confidence

Tonight, I ended up crashing and binge watching the show a friend told me about on Amazon Prime – The Ride.  Those guys are nuts – they rode their BMW adventure bikes 21,000 km/13,000 miles all the way from London to Beijing, China.  They rode the Silk Road through Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, across the Tibetan Plateau, on to China, often on “roads” that are hardly more than snow- and mud-covered ruts, masquerading as roads.

What I’m finding is, as I immerse myself in this new endeavor, this whole new world, literally and figuratively, watching others do something so far beyond the stratosphere of my own capabilities, I’m finding it massively stretches my own ideas of what is possible for myself.  After watching all that, it suddenly seems incredibly doable to, say, ride to Glacier and Banff.  Being in the states riding seems suddenly so imminently doable!!

Lessons:  Find ways to immerse yourself in the new world that you’ve chosen, even if it’s as a bystander.  It allows you to be comfortably uncomfortable with zero risk to yourself.
